We want to engage new groups of people, creating opportunities to connect more deeply with the power of the written word. Novelist David Guterson had won the PEN/Faulkner Award. Poet Denise Levertov was inspiring young writers with her work and activism. Hugo Soto-Martínez was born and raised in Los Angeles.

Museum as Muse: Writing Alongside Exhibits

Our signature Speaker Series brings acclaimed and talented writers from around the region and the country to share their work and knowledge of the writing craft with the Hugo House community. Sliding scale tuition starts at $5 and goes up to 125% of the standard pricing. Payments above the 100% rate help fund future accessible writing classes and programming. At a time when rising urban rents are driving many artists out of town and threatening small cultural organizations, the Hugo House community has come together to write a different story. The four goals of our strategic plan detail the direction we will head over the coming years.

Devils Unmasked: Monsters in Horror Fiction

Works in Progress is Hugo House’s semi-monthly writing open mic series inclusive of diverse formats. Read your work—poetry, fiction, essays, memoirs, plays, music, comedy, and more—and connect with your literary community. Bring your class or group to Hugo House for an hour of creative writing instruction on anything from poetry to flash fiction, graphic novels to performance, and beyond. Students will work with one of our talented teaching artists to experiment with writing activities, respond to prompts, and share some of their work on stage in our Salon. Whether it’s a reading, discussion, craft talk, or interview, explore these events and more featuring renowned authors, emerging writers, and talented new and local voices.

The World in a Flash: Intro to Flash Fiction

Some discuss their influences or reveal works in progress. Our teaching staff include prominent visiting writers, as well as working novelists, poets, essayists, and memoirists. Classes explore the craft of writing, from the basics (Poetry I) to the master class (Book Lab). Whoever you are and wherever your passions lie—if you want to write, there’s a Hugo House class for you. In the Young Writers Cohort, students focus on either poetry or prose with a small group of peer writers and an instructor. High-school aged students who want to focus on their writing are encouraged to apply.

Class Information

If a class is intended for a specific level, it will be noted in the class description. In this city of ideas, there was no central place for readers and writers to meet and build new audiences for their work. We offer numerous programs for anyone looking to explore the written word. Some of these programs are application-based, and many are free and open to all. All Levels | For any writer, at any level, regardless of prior writing class experience.

We offer classes online, at our Capitol Hill location, and, occasionally, other partner venues around the city. We offer opportunities for young writers to explore their creativity, from intensive Scribes summer writing camps to free drop-in writing circles with caring and experienced mentors. We strive to create a place where that vision comes to life. Where experienced writers become teachers, sharing the craft with new writers. Where passionate readers gather to discuss a new novel.

Write with Hugo House is a free drop-in writing circle for adults of all experience levels and genres of writing.

There are no cancellations or transfers available for the Writer’s Welcome Kit. Early bird and member discounts do not apply to sliding-scale classes. When we say we want our classes to be for everyone, we mean it.

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences. Hugo House is a nonprofit literary arts organization that aims to make writing accessible. Residencies, one for an established writer and one for a youth writer, are also offered. Advanced | For writers with significant experience in writing classes or workshops who are prepared to engage in comprehensive critiques and craft discussions. Scribes summer camps offer the chance for youth writers to dive deep into their writing in workshop sessions during the summer months. Camps are offered on a variety of topics both in-person and online as full- and half-week series.

Intermediate | For writers with some experience in genre-specific instruction who want to deepen their understanding and hone their craft, often featuring a workshop component. With any donation of $60 or more, our members get discounts for a wide range of bookstores, events, and Hugo House classes. Become a member or give the gift of membership to a writer in your life. We want Hugo House to be profoundly welcoming to all writers and readers, to advance racial equity, and to ensure diversity and inclusion. Tucked between SoHo and the Hudson, Hotel Hugo is a stylish and sophisticated hotel in Manhattan’s emerging West SoHo neighborhood.

Where communities converge to hear new talents and literary stars. Write with Hugo House is a free drop-in writing circle for all ages and genres. In this group, writers are provided prompts for sustained silent writing time followed by small group sessions to share. Whether it’s a reading, discussion, craft talk, or interview, find these events and more featuring renowned authors, emerging writers, and talented new and local voices. You’re guaranteed to see staff and volunteers dedicated to readers, writers, and the written word.

His parents immigrated here and worked as street vendors for most of his life to give Hugo and his five siblings more opportunities than they had in Mexico. After his dad became disabled, Hugo started working at a non-union hotel at the age of 16 to help out his family. Shortly before graduating college, he joined with his coworkers to form a union – earning better working conditions and respect on the job.
