On a recent visit, we stayed in the John Wesley Room, which had mustard-yellow walls, wood floors, and large windows. The decor felt unfussy, with little in the way of decorations beyond a fancy gilded mirror and crystal chandelier. There was both a tub and shower in the bathroom, and the room retained a sense of period grandeur without sacrificing any modern tech amenities. Every member of the staff was so attentive and friendly.

House-elves had always been subjected to work with wizards who they treated as their 'masters', and the way they were treated and how they behaved were subject to the laws of their country's wizarding government, known as Elf Legislation. Not only that, he was unintentionally insensitive to the wishes and feelings of Harry, who loved Hogwarts and his friends, and Dobby was essentially trying to cut Harry off from the things in his life that gave him real joy and purpose. Not only was he back near his dear Harry, but he also didn’t have to compromise on his desire to get paid for his work. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a "dobby" is an old English word for a benevolent elf that would perform household tasks secretly in the night, like the elves in tales of the elves and the shoemaker.
So, the moment that Dobby realised he was free of his toxic owners was definitely one of our favourite moments. Albus Dumbledore, the Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, was considered by many people (including Dobby) as the greatest wizard of all time. Despite a house-elf not requiring a wand to perform any of the above-mentioned feats of magic, it was known throughout the wizarding world that an elf had the potential to wield a wand. Doing so would greatly increase their already formidable powers; however, after the ban on wand use by magical creatures, elves were forbidden to do so.
Over the course of his employment at Hogwarts, Dobby became close friends with Aberforth Dumbledore, and spent much time at Aberforth's home in Hogsmeade, getting to and from the school through a secret tunnel. As Aberforth was an old and grumpy person, he didn't have a good relationship with many people. He also permitted Dobby to call him as he wanted (such as "a barmy old codger").
Magical abilities and skills
Harry obviously scoffs at this idea, which forces Dobby to conjure up some hijinks, attempting to force the wizard to stay in the Muggle world. Harry realizes that Dobby's heart is in the right place, and as the film wraps up, the young hero tricks Lucius Malfoy (Jason Isaacs), Dobby's owner, into setting the elf free. Once a loyal servant to the Crouch family, she finds herself jobless and resorts to drowning her sorrows in butterbeer. Winky morphs into a rather pathetic figure, illustrating the tragic side of house-elf existence when the security of servitude is abruptly taken away.
In the books
Whether he was trying to frame Harry for using underage magic (that poor dessert), closing the barrier at King’s Cross or making a Bludger go after Harry repeatedly – he was one determined house-elf. Though one particularly memorable moment is the way he tried to rationalise and justify his actions. He didn’t want to kill Harry… he just wanted to maim him (for his protection of course).
In this moment, Dobby was not only defying his old masters, he was directly trying to harm one, which most definitely shouldn’t be underestimated. It’s notoriously difficult for house-elves to break away from the families they once belonged to, and as if this act of defiance wasn't enough, Dobby truly showed his masters that he was a free elf (and has his own impressive brand of magic) by stealing their wands. He’s not just any house elf; he’s a captivating character with a storyline that spans multiple installments of the iconic Harry Potter series by J.K. His narrative arc is so rich that it resembles a roller coaster of emotions and pivotal moments.
He shows up again as a wage-earning worker in the Hogwarts kitchens, which, in the world of house-elf culture, is as avant-garde as it gets. Indeed, house-elves are engineered to fulfill the needs and caprices of wizards, bound to a life that many of us would label as servitude. Fellow house-elf Winky was devastated to have lost her job with Barty Crouch Jr, and descended into a drinking spiral at Hogwarts. To spare her blushes, Dobby would move her to the Room of Requirement when she had one too many and try to keep her spirits up in those dark moments.
This led wizards such as Albus Dumbledore and Hermione Granger to personally work to improve the lives of these creatures. Willed to be absolutely obedient to every word and command, a house-elf's only escape would be freedom via the gift of clothes by their master. Dobby, the house-elf belonging to the Malfoys, demonstrated that, in some circumstances, a house-elf could resist the bond to their master, but it would cause them great physical and emotional pain. He had a few – let’s call it ‘curious’ – judgement issues (like that time he sent a jinxed Bludger after Harry during a Quidditch match), but he always meant well. Dobby initially served the Malfoy family but was set free when Harry tricked Lucius Malfoy into giving him a sock. ’Dobby has no master… Dobby is a free elf,’ he told Bellatrix, shortly before his demise in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
However, Kreacher later started to respect Harry and be less prejudiced in general. It is possible that, since Kreacher had contact with the Hogwarts kitchen house-elves, he had contact with Dobby, too, and their common ground caused a release of the bad blood, but it is unknown. Dobby might not have learned about Kreacher's change before he was killed in 1998. Kreacher looked like Dobby in appearance, but was angry and antagonistic in character. On Harry's orders, Dobby, along with Kreacher, formerly the House of Black's house-elf who now belonged to Harry, tailed Draco Malfoy and helped Harry learn that Draco was using the Room of Requirement.
He isn't yet used to being able to talk about the Malfoy family freely, but defiantly says that he doesn't care what they think anymore. Dobby tells Harry that he is going to buy a jumper next with his wages, and is delighted when Ron offers to give him this year's Christmas jumper from his mother. As Harry, Ron and Hermione prepare to leave the kitchens, Dobby tentatively asks whether he can visit Harry and beams when Harry agrees. Dobby was a house-elf, for years indentured to the Malfoy family, until his admiration for Harry Potter goaded him into trying to warn Harry against coming to school in his second year because he knew what Lucius was planning with the diary. Dobby interfered with Harry’s life a number of times that year with less than successful results, but in June he earned his freedom when Harry tricked Lucius Malfoy into giving the elf a sock (CS18).
Thus, each sock left behind is a fan’s wish for Dobby’s eternal freedom. The guidelines on house-elf welfare were a set of regulations passed by the British Ministry of Magic regarding the treatment of house-elves. Despite their existence at the time, these guidelines were not enforced by the Ministry of Magic by 1996,[7] and therefore many wizarding households such as the Malfoys and the Blacks mistreated their elves.

After failing to find a job during Harry's third year at Hogwarts, Dobby came to work at the kitchens of Hogwarts along with many other house elves, including Barty Crouch Sr.'s fired elf, Winky. Dobby's only conditions was to be allowed to wear clothes, much to the disgust of the other elves, who considered him an insane and deranged outsider for his independent behavior. Over the course of his employment at Hogwarts, Dobby became close friends with Aberforth Dumbledore and spent much time at Aberforth's home in Hogsmeade. Aberforth seemed to have a close attachment to Dobby, since he felt very sorry when he learned he died. At Christmas, Hermione always made clothes as gifts for all hard-working house elves at Hogwarts and she thought everyone loved them. In reality, Dobby confided to Harry that the he took all those gifts himself, as no elf dares to accept clothes, which are an insult for them and the symbol of unemployment.

He considered himself to be a good house-elf, though other house-elves seemed to find his desires and proclamations of being a free house-elf to be shameful. He explained to Harry, Ron, and Hermione that he liked freedom very much, but he liked work better.
For example, despite his loathing for Sirius Black, Kreacher could not disobey his direct orders. However, when Sirius yelled at him to "get out", which he meant to get out of the kitchen, Kreacher was able to interpret the command in a way that enabled him to leave number 12 Grimmauld Place and go to Sirius' cousins, Narcissa Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange. Using magic on a wizard a whole lot taller than you must have been terrifying, yet Dobby did everything in his power to stop Malfoy from harming Harry. The moment Dobby overheard (faux) Mad-Eye Moody talking about the properties of Gillyweed, he sped off to steal Snape's stocks so Harry wouldn’t fail in his second Triwizard Tournament task, even though getting caught would probably have got him sacked. Dobby is responsible for Harry's lack of letters over the summer; he has been intercepting them in an attempt to discourage Harry from returning to school.
Dobby’s methods of keeping Harry out of Hogwarts in Chamber of Secrets maybe weren’t such a good idea (see the aforementioned cake-dropping) but he had great intentions. Dobby then came to work at Hogwarts, where he actually received payment for his labors (GF21) and was much more successful at helping and protecting Harry. Our sunflowers are harvested every fall to press the seeds into culinary oil, however, they are a sight to behold while they are blooming. Oilseed sunflowers are not like ornamental sunflower varieties that bloom for 3 weeks or more. Oilseed sunflowers bloom and begin to turn their heads to start drying their seed after only about 12 days. This means that we have a limited window to enjoy them in. This window is when we hold our Sunflower Festival; when they are the most beautiful.

We also bring a selection of our cuts to every farmer's market we attend. All of our lamb is processed into retail cuts by The Local Butcher in Center Barnstead NH and Green Mountain Smokehouse, both USDA inspected facilities.

For our corn maze customers, we have a lovely picnic area in a shaded area near the maze. There are plenty of benches and picnic tables to sit at. We also offer a variety of drinks and snacks for purchase at our farm stand. Carlsbad Strawberry Company has been growing Strawberries for four generations.

In 2007, we started with only two-acres of our first crop of winter canola to press for culinary oil, and we haven’t looked back. We quickly found out how much the local deer populations appreciated our canola feeding stations, and needed a solution. Although predation played a role in our decision to grow sunflowers, the need also had to encompass our overall vision for our farm. From our motto to “compliment not compete”, grew the desire to produce a product that has been absent from the New England agricultural scene. Our feed costs to date have been drastically reduced, and we have control over its contents. Our ultimate goal is to produce multi-use crops that aid in the sustainability of our farm and the local food system.

In rare instances where weather conditions are forecast to be dangerous, such as lightning, flooding, or damaging winds, the event may be cancelled for the evening. Every attempt will be made to notify patrons of that night's cancellation on the website, email, and Facebook. If severe weather is forecast please check the website for announcements before coming to the event. We will make this decision as early as possible based on anticipated weather conditions, with enough time to alert everyone. Refunds due to customer cancellations will be handled on a case by case basis.

Every year, our corn maze theme encompasses something that you would see in your own backyard, be it animal, plant, reptile, amphibian or avian. As you move through the 8-10 foot corn, you will come across trivia questions that help you find your way through or help you get lost.

The Oasis Camel Dairy invites everyone to discover their beautiful San Diego attraction and enjoy their relationship with their beloved animals. Amy’s Farm is a real working poly culture farm that provides hands-on, guided tours to students of all ages.

The area continues to sit, unused, with perhaps the exception of the Administration Building, a Spanish Revival style structure built in 1926. The building had several cars surrounding it during the time of my visit and has not fallen victim to lack of care, however it, like all of the other buildings is behind chainlink and barbed wire. If you wish to purchase an online ticket, you must do so by midnight the day before you wish to attend. Online tickets will be unavailable the same day of the event and will need to be purchased at the farm stand upon arrival. Ostrich Land is a fun side trip while visiting Solvang. There are about 50 these flightless birds at the ranch and their main purpose in life is to attract visitors.
Every June, Bennett’s Honey Farm offers 3 daily train tours to visit their farm during the Annual California Honey Festival. The honey festival is an educational and tasty experience held in conjunction with the Fillmore & Western Railway. No, we do not offer to reschedule your ride or give refunds if there is not enough snow for a sleigh. The safety of our guests, staff and animals are our top priority, and we do our best to make an informed decision regarding cancelling rides as soon as possible.
In addition to attending their public events, you can support Coppal House Farm by shopping their stall at the Portsmouth and Exeter Summer Farmers’ Markets and the Stratham and Rollinsford Winter Farmers’ Markets. You can also visit their farmstand (open daily 10-5pm), join their egg CSA, or shop their online store. Dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Coppal House Farm requires guests to leave pets at home to provide a safer and more positive experience for all attendees, including those pets.
Peltzer Farms is open year round for family and school groups to visit. They have a whole host of activities including gold mining, train rides, a petting farm, pony rides, a tractor garden and mini John Deere carts. If we determine the weather to be unsuitable for sleigh riding, a staff member will call the phone number and email the address given at the time the reservation was made by 10 am the day of your reservation. Please do not call the farm to check on your reservation.
We maintain a flock of heritage breed chickens that are free to eat the grasses, grains and grubs on our property. We do this because nothing tastes better than an egg from a happy chicken. Our eggs are picked daily and each dozen is marked with a "picked on" date, so you know exactly how fresh they are. Coppal House Farm got its start in Stratham, NH 31 years ago as Coppal House Station, a small family farm run by John and Carol Hutton. They decided to make the move to a 78-acre piece of farmland in Lee, NH that was once a dairy farm, with just six sheep, two Belgian draft horses, three cats and a border collie. The farm name then changed from “station” to “farm” because of the unfamiliarity of the word “station”; a name for a large sheep farm in New Zealand.
